AI Self Checkout
This is an AI-powered self-checkout machine. The top camera enables facial recognition, allowing customers to automatically access their membership details, apply discounts, and earn reward points. Stores can also send targeted ads based on customer data. Object recognition helps prevent theft and missed barcode scans.

This product was showcased at ISE 2025 in Spain and Touch Taiwan.
Another UX designer conducted the initial user research for this product. I was responsible for the UI design and later took over the full UX/UI design for the product.
Challenge
The challenge was designing a large, vertical touchscreen while making sure users could see the information clearly, tap buttons easily, and complete checkout smoothly. AI technology also needed to blend naturally into the experience.
Since we built the product from scratch, our team didn’t have the hardware during the design phase. So, we tested the final design on the hardware later.
Sitemap & Wireframe

Besides checkout, customers can get discount coupons automatically. The system has three modes: members, regular customers, and employees.
Style

I designed both a colorful theme and a clean, fresh style. In the end, we chose a simple, clear, and practical design, making it ideal for supermarkets and stores.
Details

1. Since the camera is at the top, the system shows a message when facial recognition is successful.
2. We used taller buttons so users of different heights can tap them comfortably.
3. AI can detect a user’s age or gender and show relevant ads.
4. AI object recognition helps remind users if an item wasn’t scanned properly.

I also created a design system with illustrations and micro-animations to make it easy for Western customers to use.
